CBD and Diabetes: Can it Help?

Diabetes Week (12th – 18th June)

Diabetes is a life-long condition where the amount of sugar in your blood (blood glucose) is too high. Over time, this can cause serious health problems, such as heart disease, kidney disease and nerve damage in the legs and feet. However, you can prevent this through managing your blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and cholesterol through professional treatment, such as using an insulin pump or having an islet cell transplant. There are two main types of diabetes

  1. Type 1 Diabetes (T1D): Where the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin.
  2. Type 2 Diabetes (T2D): Where the body does not produce enough insulin, or the body’s cells do not react to insulin. In the UK, over 90% of all adults with diabetes have T2D.

The main symptoms of diabetes include increased thirst, needing to pee a lot, feeling more tired than usual, losing weight without trying to, frequent episodes of thrush, and blurred vision. However, lots of people with T2D don’t realise it because the early symptoms tend to be general, or there are no symptoms at all.

There are no lifestyle changes that you can make to lower your risk of T1D, however there are a number of lifestyle changes that you can make to reduce the risk of T2D, such as adopting a healthy diet and engaging in regular exercise. There is also growing conversation around Cannabidiol (CBD) — the non-psychoactive compound found in the hemp plant — and how this might be able to help diabetics.

In this article, we answer your most asked questions on CBD and diabetes, including the potential benefits it offers for people with diabetes.

Can You Use CBD With Diabetes?

The World Health Organisation (WHO) reports that CBD is well-tolerated with a good safety profile. However, for diabetics taking prescribed medication and/or insulin to manage their diabetes, adverse effects could occur as a result of a cannabinoid-drug interaction. In other words, an interaction could occur between CBD and your existing medication. It is therefore important that you talk with your doctor before you start taking CBD, in particular as there’s a lack of clinical evidence to otherwise provide clear guidelines.

Does CBD Help With Diabetes?

At its core, diabetes is an inflammatory condition and CBD does have proven anti-inflammatory properties. In addition to this, emerging research on the relationship between the two has shown some promising results.  However, more research is needed.

  • One study on the levels and blood markers for type 2 diabetes found that CBD reduced levels of resistin — a hormone that increases the production of ‘bad cholesterol’ — and increased levels of the hormone that stimulates the release of insulin.
  • In another study using mouse models, CBD was shown to significantly reduce the incidence of diabetes in these mice.
  • A 2020 medical review also found that CBD has the ‘promising potential as a therapeutic agent’ because it can affect a number of factors that contribute to the development of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, such as reducing inflammation and altering glucose metabolism.

The benefits of CBD for diabetes are perhaps less about what it does for your blood sugar, but more about what it enables you to do that can help you manage your symptoms. For example, Rob Howe tells Healthline that ‘being able to ‘get more exercise without pain and better sleep have [had an] indirect impact on my diabetes’ and concludes that this ‘tips the scale’ in favour of CBD being a positive thing for diabetics. And the science supports this.

Nerve Damage and Pain Management

Nerve damage, also known as diabetic neuropathy, is a common complication from diabetes. A 2020 study in rats found that CBD can increase the development of nerves and nervous tissue, which has the potential to alleviate nerve pain. Another 2020 study found that CBD may provide neuroprotective benefits by reducing inflammation in the brain.

It is also well documented that CBD can help to reduce chronic pain by affecting endocannabinoid receptor activity, reducing inflammation, and interacting with neurotransmitters.

CBD can help to improve the quantity and quality of your sleep, and improving your sleep can help control your blood sugar levels. In a 2021 study, 48% of people taking CBD for sleep reported that it helped them to fall asleep quicker, with 40% saying it also helped them to sleep better

Mental Health

CBD is thought to be effective for alleviating symptoms of several mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression. This is, in part, because it is a potent antioxidant that helps fight oxidative stress — an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants — but also because its interactions with our endocannabinoid system are thought to help regulate emotional homeostasis and cognitive function.

Can CBD Cause Diabetes?

There is no scientific evidence to suggest that CBD can cause diabetes. One 2012 study found that CBD did not cause harm or worsening of diabetes control.

Which CBD is Best for Diabetics?

If you’re diabetic, you should be cautious about what is in the products you purchase. It is a good rule of thumb to avoid CBD that contains added sugar, artificial flavourings, artificial dyes or contaminants.

You should always purchase from a reputable brand that uses safe and certified processes, and is transparent about their ingredients and manufacturing processes. Look for lab results and quality assurance proof with all products, so you know exactly what you’re about to purchase.

At Purity Hemp, we grow our organic hemp in nutrient-rich soil and predictable climates to produce the perfect plant, which is then farmed using sustainable and quality-assured processes. This is extracted with CO2 extraction and then lab tested by independent analysts, before reaching the customer in its 100% THC-free form. Shop our full range of premium products.
