CBD and Period Pain: Can It Help Provide Relief?

Menstrual cramps are an unfortunate but common part of a menstrual cycle. It happens when the muscular wall of the womb contracts to help the womb lining shed, which also produces pain-triggering chemicals. Less commonly, period pain can be caused by an underlying medical condition, such as endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease, or by an intrauterine device (IUD). The pain ranges from mild to severe, and can come in intense spasms or be a dull but more constant pain. Period pain is often felt in the lower abdomen, but it can radiate to the back and thighs.

When you pair this with fluctuations in mood, fatigue, headaches, breast tenderness, acne, bloating, insomnia, nausea, and muscle and joint pain, it’s no surprise that it’s an unpleasant and disruptive time of the month for lots of us. Indeed, periods can make it difficult to carry out your normal routine, and in more severe cases, affect your quality of life.

As more people turn to Cannabidiol (CBD) for its potential pain relieving properties, there is growing conversation around whether CBD can help with period pain, as well as other period-related symptoms, such as headaches and fatigue.

Can CBD Help With Period Pain?

As research suggests that Cannabidiol (CBD) might help reduce inflammation and chronic pain, it might also be able to help with period pain. And the research is promising — one 2019 study found that, in women with endometriosis, CBD was one of the highest rated in terms of self-reported effectiveness in pain reduction. Another found that women who received CBD for menstrual pain reported a significant reduction in pain intensity compared to the placebo group. And a  2019 review of studies concluded that cannabis might be helpful with chronic and acute pain relief, and CBD might be an appropriate, natural alternative treatment for managing period symptoms.

This is linked to the belief that CBD is able to bind to the receptors in your endocannabinoid system — the system that regulates many of your body’s functions, including pain sensation and inflammation— to produce better and longer-lasting therapeutic effects. In the case of your period, this might include:

  1. Reducing Inflammation: Regular and chronic inflammation could be countered by CBD through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which would reduce pain.
  2. Mood Regulation: CBD might be able to interact with serotonin receptors in the brain to alleviate symptoms of depression, and produce anti-stress effects.
  3. Improving Sleep: CBD interacts with sleep-related receptors in the brain, with one trial showing that CBD increased self-reported sleep duration in individuals with insomnia.

Although over-the-counter pain medication can offer some relief then, lots of people are turning to alternative methods, including CBD, to manage their period symptoms.

Cannabinoid medicine expert, Dr Dani Gordon, claims that CBD “has “well-established, well-studied anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects across a wide range of chronic pain conditions”, and that her ““patients who took CBD oil daily at a high enough dose for chronic pain, including cyclical period pain and PMS symptoms, reported less severe symptoms after three months of consistent use.”

How to Take CBD During Your Period

Cannabidiol (CBD) can be taken in lots of different ways, including as oils, edibles and topicals. How you take CBD depends on your preference, but oils tend to be absorbed faster than edibles. If you’re new to CBD, we would recommend that you start with a low dose of 10mg, and increase as required.

If you’re struggling with muscle and joint pain, you might want to use a topical instead. These creams, lotions and balms provide localised relief from pain, and could be applied to your back or lower abdomen to ease period pain. Indeed, in humans, relief of painful joints and sore muscles is one of the most commonly reported uses of topical cannabis products, with clinical trials reporting lower pain and disability scores, and improvements in sleep quantity and overall quality of life from those who used hemp-derived CBD products.

In addition, a 2016 study on rats found that applying CBD gel reduced joint inflammation and pain with no adverse effects, and a more recent 2022 study found that there were beneficial effects of topical cannabinoids in treating a myriad of skin conditions.
