Does CBD Help with Allergies?

Allergies are a common and often complex problem for lots of us. It is estimated that allergies affect more than 20% of the population in most developed countries. However, the UK has some of the highest rates of allergic conditions in the world, with 44% of adults suffering from at least one, and almost half of those suffering from more than one — with that number expected to rise. Common allergens include pollen, dust, fur, latex, mould, insect stings, and certain foods and medications. Symptoms can range from mild to severe, and the most common symptoms include:

  • sneezing
  • runny nose
  • pain or tenderness around cheeks, eyes or forehead
  • red, itchy, watery eyes
  • itchy skin or hives
  • swollen eyes, lips, mouth or throat
  • nausea or being sick

Most allergic reactions are mild, but a severe and life-threatening reaction can occur called anaphylactic shock, which requires urgent medical attention.

While there are medical treatments available for allergies, including antihistamines, some people are turning to CBD as a potential solution.

Does CBD Help with Allergies?

When the body detects a foreign substance, such as pollen or dust, it releases histamines that trigger an immune response. Although this is the body’s way to protect itself, this response can lead to inflammation, which causes the uncomfortable symptoms associated with allergies. CBD might be able to help with allergies as it has been shown to reduce inflammation by interacting with our endocannabinoid system. This is the system that regulates lots of our internal processes, and it is thought that when CBD binds with its receptors, it can help reduce inflammation

In addition to reducing inflammation, CBD might also help alleviate other symptoms associated with allergies, such as congestion, pain and insomnia, which can help improve our overall physical and mental wellness.

Although research is limited, the studies that have been conducted on the relationship between CBD and allergies have produced promising results.

  • One 2016 study found that CBD could greatly reduce the amount of histamine produced in an allergic reaction, and may be used for relieving congestion and inflammatory symptoms. It also found that topical application suppressed the recruitment of mast cells and reduced the level of blood histamine.
  • An earlier 2005 study found that CBD can suppress the signalling of mast cells, which prevents histamine release (the allergic response).
  • A 2018 study found that CBD may have anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects by reducing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines.
  • A 2019 study found that CBD reduces airway inflammation and fibrosis in allergic asthma.
  • 2020 research noted that studies have convincingly demonstrated the anti-inflammatory properties exerted by cannabinoids in the airways and the skin in the context of allergic diseases, both in mice and humans.

Best CBD for Allergies

The best CBD for your allergies depends on the type of allergy symptoms you experience.

  • For rashes and skin inflammation, a topical cream or balm is recommended.
  • For other allergy symptoms, the most common methods for consuming CBD are oils and edibles.

You should choose a delivery method that fits your symptoms and lifestyle. In terms of dosage, the general rule of thumb is to start with a low dosage and increase as needed. For more help, read our full guides on The Different Types of CBD and How to Choose a CBD Product.

Allergy symptoms can disrupt our daily life and greatly affect our quality of life. If you haven’t found relief from traditional allergy medications, or are looking for a natural alternative for your symptoms, CBD could help. It’s important to note that CBD shouldn’t be used as a treatment for severe allergic reactions, nor as a replacement for traditional allergy medications.
