Is CBD Safe?

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is the non-psychoactive compound found in the cannabis plant that has gained widespread attention in recent years due to its potential health benefits. Users commonly use CBD to alleviate pain, stress and other symptoms associated with various conditions, such as depression, epilepsy and osteoporosis And the list of potential benefits continues to grow year-on-year, with clinical trials and research ongoing for its efficacy in treating several different conditions and diseases.

Despite this, scepticism remains due to the stigma associated with cannabis, with some people reluctant to explore the CBD products that are now on the market as a result. In this article, we explore how safe CBD is, and shed light on its distinctions from cannabis and the current scientific research on the topic.

People get “high” when consuming cannabis, so it’s easy to see why people would assume that the consumption of any cannabis-derived compound would result in a psychoactive, mind-altering effect.

However, the cannabis plant consists of several hundred different chemical compounds and active ingredients, known as cannabinoids. The two most abundant cannabinoids are:

  • Cannabidiol (CBD)
  • Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)

Despite having the same molecular structure, only THC is psychoactive – cannabidiol is not.

This means you can take CBD oil and other CBD products with total assurance that you won’t experience psychoactive effects. Indeed, CBD’s effects are much more subtle than THC. Because CBD doesn’t bind to CB1 receptors the same way that THC does, the sense of euphoria associated with this is absent. Instead, CBD interactions with your endocannabinoid system, where it helps it to regulate and improve several of our physiological functions, such as stress and sleep.

So what is the current medical advice on the matter?

There is currently a pre-review report on cannabidiol from the Expert Committee on Drug Dependence at the World Health Organization (WHO) which found that CBD does not induce major side effects or physical dependence, does not get you high, and is not associated with abuse potential. In fact, it is rather the opposite. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD, and their report found that naturally occurring CBD is safe and well tolerated in humans. Indeed, both anecdotal and scientific evidence has long suggested that CBD can offer a range of therapeutic benefits.

We also have a report from MedlinePlus – a trusted part of the National Institutes of Health in the USA- which listed how how effective cannabidiol is likely to be for certain medical conditions and illnesses. It highlighted that, although further research is certainly required to substantiate the mixture of anecdotal and scientific evidence that has recently excited wellness communities across the globe, CBD is possibly safe to take in appropriate doses and can provide therapeutic relief to those suffering from seizure disorder (epilepsy), anxiety, pain, dystonia, Alzheimer’s disease, Crohn disease, and many other conditions.

The absence of psychoactive properties in CBD should reassure many. And this is particularly true for those people who may be on the fence about taking products like CBD oil or capsules.

CBD has, without a doubt, captured the attention of medical professionals in the past few years. As interest around this chemical compound continues to grow, so will the appetite for clinical studies into its therapeutic potential.

To conclude then, CBD is widely regarded as being safe to use. There is no evidence that it has the ability to trigger an addictive response. However, you should treat any new wellness product with an air of caution, and speak to your doctor before taking any new supplement – in particular if you take medication.

We are a challenger CBD brand that is built on trust, transparency, integrity, and confidence. Our brand promise is that every product created contains the highest quality ingredients and has full traceability from seed to shelf. Product traceability is a vital consideration for consumers interested in purchasing cannabis or hemp-based products.

Our passion is to educate and support individuals to the natural benefits of pure products and offer consultation on nutrition, healthy living, mental stability and general wellness.

In the UK, CBD products can only be sold legally if they have less than 0.2% of THC content. These trace amounts of THC would not be enough to produce any noticeable psychoactive effects, and these products are otherwise considered safe. However, you should choose CBD derived from organically grown hemp, as this ensures minimal exposure to harmful chemicals and contaminants, and look for third-party laboratory reports to verify how pure and potent your product is.

You should also keep in mind that finding the right dose and administration method can be a trial-and-error process as results can vary significantly from person to person. Start with a low dose and gradually increase it while monitoring its effects, and stop taking CBD or reduce your dose if you experience any adverse side effects.

We firmly believe the full therapeutic potential of CBD is yet to be truly realised and, as research into this chemical compound continues, we are confident that more consumers will begin to explore the use of CBD for a range of mental and physical ailments and benefits.
