There are a number of factors that influence how strong your Cannabidiol (CBD) is, including the cultivation of the plant, the method of extraction, and the purity and concentration of the final product.
In general, good growing conditions and CO2 extraction creates the most CBD-rich extraction of cannabis oil. However, the strength of your oil will largely depend on the concentration of the final product. In this article, we explain this in more detail, and answer your most frequently asked questions on strong CBD.
What Is High-Strength CBD?
A high-strength CBD product is one which has a high concentration of CBD per ml. In general, a high-strength oil has a concentration of 20% or above, a medium oil is between 10 – 15%, and a mild oil is 10% or lower. However, in other CBD products, different concentrations can be considered high strength depending on their effect. For example, a lip balm or tea will be lower in strength, but could deliver a more potent result. On the same note, the exact concentration that qualifies as high-strength may vary depending on individual tolerance levels and the intended use of the product; using CBD for skin is very different to taking it sublingually, for example.
All of these products are legal in the UK, as long as they contain less than 0.2% THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol — the main psychoactive cannabinoid that is found in the cannabis plant), and are granted authorisation by the Food Standards Agency to be sold as a novel food.

It is important to note that isolate products will contain a significant amount of CBD per ml, but because they’re purified to remove all other compounds, including other cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids, they will have a lesser strength. Full-spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD products, on the other hand, contain other compounds found in the hemp plant. This contributes towards the desired entourage effect, where several different compounds work together to achieve a greater effect that would otherwise be impossible for them to achieve on their own.
In short, if you’re looking for the strongest products with the most effect, you should avoid those that use isolate CBD and instead invest in products with full or broad-spectrum CBD. Keep in mind that full-spectrum CBD does contain traces of THC, that could show up on a drug test. For more help understanding the difference, read about The Different Types of CBD here.
How is CBD Strength Calculated?
Milligrams alone don’t equal CBD strength.
CBD strength is based on the concentration of CBD in the product, which is measured in milligrams (mg) per millilitre (ml) or as a percentage of the total product. This is calculated by dividing the total amount of CBD by the total volume of the product.
For example, if a CBD oil contains 1000mg of CBD in a 10ml bottle, the strength of the tincture would be 10%. This would be different to 1000mg in a 20ml bottle, which would be 5% concentration despite containing the same amount of CBD.
What’s the Strongest CBD Oil in the UK?
Purity Hemp’s 4000mg CBD Oil Tincture is one of the strongest CBD oils available in the UK. A 10ml bottle is packed with 4000mg of CBD, active phytocannabinoids and terpenes and a coconut carrier oil to deliver the maximum therapeutic effects. Their bottles contain 250 drops (20mg each), and are blacked out to block light which can otherwise reduce the product’s potency and shelf life.

All of Purity Hemp’s products are traceable from seed to shelf. Their experienced farmers grow and harvest organic hemp in nutrient-rich soil and clean water sources, which is extracted using the safest, cleanest, and purest method (CO2 extraction with patented tech), and then tested and certified by third-party, independent quality control analysts.
The Benefits of Strong CBD Oil
Stronger CBD oil products offer a number of physical and financial benefits alongside the better-known benefits of CBD.
1. Cost-Effective
Although it’s a more expensive initial cost, you will get more for your money in the long run.
Purchasing a larger amount of CBD in one go is often cheaper than buying the same amount in several low strength bottles.
2. Easier to Take
With a stronger product, you need to take much less to get your desired effect. For example, just one drop of 40% oil is 20 mg of CBD whereas, to achieve that dosage with a 5% oil where there is 2 mg per drop, you would need to take ten drops.
The one downside is that it’s easier to take too much. That said, it’s unlikely that you’ll experience any adverse side effects as, although it’s possible to overdose on CBD, it’s very difficult to do so — in particular if you are careful to monitor how much you take.
3. Flexible
You can easily scale your dose up or down, depending on your needs. Smaller doses of a higher strength product might also make taking your dose more convenient, in particular if you’re on-the-go or don’t like the taste.
4. Extra Strong Relief
Great for individuals with long-term ailments and pain, or professional athletes looking to improve their recovery time.

Final Thoughts
When purchasing high-strength CBD products, it’s important to ensure that they are high-quality and safe for long-term use. You should:
- Look for products that are third-party lab tested. This ensures that they are accurately labelled, and don’t contain any nasty contaminants.
- Check the THC content, in particular if you are subject to drug tests. Our CBD has been certified as safe for use in sports.
- Purchase from a reputable brand that uses safe and certified processes.
