The Complete Guide to CBD Drinks

The Complete Guide to CBD Drinks

Since Cannabidiol (CBD) was legalised in the UK in 2018, there’s been an explosion of new products in our shops. Alongside oils, balms and edibles, “wellness drinks”  infused with CBD have grown in popularity in recent years.

Indeed, a 2019 report from Visual Capitalist wrote that CBD-infused drinks were expected to become the next big thing — and they were right. Financial data experts Benzinga estimate that the CBD drinks sector will be worth $46.3 billion by 2032 as a result of a growing interest from individuals to consume in moderation, and a rising consumer demand for “functional” beverages that offer therapeutic properties.

If you’re new to CBD, or looking for a new way to enjoy the benefits, CBD-infused beverages could be for you. Want to know more? We answer your FAQs on CBD drinks below, starting with what a CBD drink is.

What Are CBD Drinks?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is the non-psychoactive compound found in the hemp plant that, when consumed, is thought to help maintain balance in your endocannabinoid system and promote a range of therapeutic benefits. This includes reduced stress, better sleep, improved gut health, and the potential to counter chronic inflammation, amongst others.

As their name suggests, CBD drinks are beverages infused with Cannabidiol (CBD). CBD drinks contain the same components as other CBD products, but offer consumers a newer, tastier and more convenient way to enjoy their regular dose. The types of CBD drinks you might come across include,

  1. Tea
  2. Coffee – Pods and Beans
  3. Flavoured Water
  4. Juice
  5. Alcohol – Beers, Wines and Spirits
  6. Cocktails
  7. Mocktails

How Do CBD Drinks Work?

CBD drinks are absorbed into the bloodstream via the digestive system, and then thought to interact with the endocannabinoid system to stop endocannabinoids from being broken down, which allows them to be more effective.

It can take from around 20-90 minutes for you to feel the effects. This depends on a number of factors, including the amount consumed and your metabolism. Remember that everyone is unique; the time it takes for a CBD drink to “kick in” will vary from person to person.

Benefits of CBD Drinks

CBD drinks are considered to be more convenient and versatile in flavour than “traditional” CBD products, while offering the same potential benefits. Depending on the type and strength of your beverage, this includes:

  1. Reduce anxiety and stress.
  2. Help you manage pain.
  3. Promote faster recovery time.
  4. Increase your focus.
  5. Assist with getting a better night’s sleep.
  6. Improve general health and wellness.

There is some evidence to suggest that CBD can curtail the effects of caffeine, so people can feel alert without feeling on edge. Indeed, Fiona Beckett of The Guardian describes it as an adult soft drink that makes you feel good, without the hangover.

CBD products are legal in the UK, as long as they don’t contain more than 0.2% Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

We would recommend that you check the brand you’re purchasing from is approved in line with UK and EU legislation, and that their products are all third-party lab tested.

Can CBD Drinks Get You High?

In the UK, CBD drinks should not get you high because the Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) that is responsible for the high is illegal, and will therefore not be present.

To eliminate your risk of ingesting THC, you should opt for broad-spectrum drinks. Unlike full-spectrum products, which contain trace amounts of THC that can show up on drug tests, broad-spectrum drinks are 100% THC-free. This is useful if you’re an athlete that is subject to drug tests, but still want to take CBD for improved performance and recovery times.

Are CBD Drinks Safe?

As a natural, non-psychoactive compound, CBD does not have any mind-altering effects. Indeed, The World Health Organisation (WHO) found that there is no evidence of public health problems associated with its use. In addition, most CBD drinks contain a low dose, so you don’t need to worry about overdosing on CBD.

How Many CBD Drinks Can You Have?

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) recommends that you do not take more than 70mg of CBD a day, unless a doctor has agreed on a higher dosage. We would recommend that you start with 10-15mg, and then build it up until you find your perfect dose. Most drinks will contain between 5-15mg of CBD, so you could start with 1-2 drinks a day, and go from there.
