When Is The Best Time to Take CBD?

There is no one right answer as to the best time to take CBD. The best time to take CBD depends on your individual preferences and what you are taking CBD for. For example, someone taking CBD for sleep will often take it at night before bed, whereas someone taking it for pain might take it in the morning. Before we go into more detail, it’s important to first understand the key factors that influence the optimum time for you to take CBD.

Our individual biological makeup and metabolism can impact how we respond to CBD. Factors such as age, weight, metabolism, digestive health, liver function and overall health can influence how quickly CBD is metabolised and how long it lasts. Faster metabolizers may experience quicker onset of effects and shorter duration of action than those with a slow metabolism, for instance. On a similar note, individuals with higher body weight may require higher doses to experience the same effects as those with lower body weight. Understanding your body’s unique response to CBD can help you to determine the ideal time to take it, depending on your needs.

As well as our individual factors, CBD is available in various different forms, with each having their own unique average onset time and duration. For example, CBD oils administered under the tongue (sublingually) are absorbed directly into the bloodstream which results in faster onset of effects than edibles, which have a slower onset of effects but tend to provide longer-lasting relief. On a similar note, vaping allows for much quicker absorption than topical application (which provides localised relief without entering the bloodstream), but can have a shorter duration of effects. Determining your preferred method of consumption, and understanding how long this can take to kick in, will help.

Your reason for using CBD is perhaps the most important factor to consider. From stress relief and pain management to battling addiction or the everyday cold, different people will use CBD for different reasons. Understanding your specific goals can help determine when the best time to take CBD is for you. For example:

  • Pain: Research has shown that CBD can alleviate chronic pain from conditions like arthritis or migraines. You can take CBD as and when it is needed, but many prefer to take it in the morning or before bed depending on how their pain impacts them.
  • Anxiety: CBD may help promote relaxation and provide anxiety relief. As such, it’s often taken in the morning before anxiety-inducing situations, but can be taken before bedtime to improve sleep.
  • Sleep: CBD can promote better sleep by reducing anxiety and promoting relaxation, and this is taken before bedtime.
  • Muscle Recovery: CBD may aid in muscle recovery after exercise by reducing inflammation and promoting relaxation, which is often taken after physical activity is completed.
  • Seizures: Research has shown that, when used as part of a treatment plan, CBD can be effective in reducing the frequency and severity of seizures. You should follow the dosage guidance your doctor recommends.
  • Gut Health: Research has shown that CBD can reduce inflammation in the digestive tract that is associated with digestive disorders. There is no set time to take CBD for your gut health, but you might wish to take it in the morning, or before and after you eat depending on your symptoms.
  • Skin Conditions: CBD’s anti-inflammatory, pain-relieving and skin-soothing properties can help with skin conditions, such as eczema. Typically, you will apply a topical CBD cream as and when you need it.

In conclusion, understanding what you want to use CBD for, how your body responds to CBD and how long this takes, will help to inform when the best time to take it is for you.

Taking CBD in the morning can help you feel calm and focused, making it suitable for addressing anxiety or stress-related issues. Morning doses of CBD may also provide sustained relief throughout the day for conditions like chronic pain or inflammation.

A morning dose of CBD is also great if you usually take supplements in the morning (in line with your routine), or you’re up for an AM workout – more on that below.

There is also some evidence that suggests CBD can be an effective wake-inducing agent. A 2015 review determined that CBD helped increase wakefulness during sleeping time. However, other evidence suggests that CBD can have a sedative effect.

A midday dose of CBD may act as a pick-me-up, helping to alleviate stress, improve mood, and enhance focus without causing drowsiness. Drink an afternoon coffee? A CBD coffee has calming properties which balance out the caffeine jitters for total inner equilibrium.

Taking CBD in the evening, particularly before bedtime, can improve the length and depth of our sleep.

An evening dose of CBD is also ideal if you usually take supplements then (sticking with your routine), if you need help with winding down, or if you need to relieve aches and pains after a long day out.

You can take CBD both before and after your workout. If you take CBD before you exercise, it might give you an energy boost, increase your focus and tackle any pre-workout nerves or sports performance anxiety (SPA). If you take it after your workout, it can help reduce inflammation and offer relief from sore muscles and joints.

There is also evidence to suggest that CBD can help your yoga practice, if you like to kickstart (or end) your day with yoga.

By considering these factors, individuals can tailor their CBD intake to optimize its effectiveness for their specific needs and preferences. Experimenting with different dosages, methods of consumption, and timing can help. However, you should start low and slow, and increase your dose gradually until you find that sweet spot. Then, aim to keep your CBD dosage consistent to see if it works for you. After you’ve given it enough time (at least a week or two), you can try a new time to take CBD if it’s not working as you’d like it to be.

As well as the dosage, there are several other factors to consider before purchasing CBD:

  • Medications: CBD has the potential to interact with certain medications, so it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional before taking CBD.

  • Type of CBD: Broad-spectrum CBD is a great option for those who want to experience the effects of CBD without consuming THC, the psychoactive compound in the cannabis plant. Clinical reports suggest that broad or full-spectrum CBD may have a better effect due to the number of cannabinoids and other plant compounds they contain that work together, otherwise known as the entourage effect

  • Source and Quality: Choose CBD derived from organically grown hemp, as this ensures minimal exposure to harmful chemicals. You should also look for third-party laboratory reports to verify how pure and potent your product is, and to ensure there are no contaminants.

  • Individual Variability: The effectiveness of CBD may vary from person to person; what works for one individual may not work for another.

  • Irritants: Check the product’s ingredients list for terpenes, fragrances, and other allergens, such as nuts and nut oils, that can make some painful skin conditions, such as eczema or Raynaud’s, worse.
