In recent years, cannabidiol (CBD) has surged in popularity as a natural remedy for various ailments, ranging from chronic pain to depression. Deciding that CBD is the way forward for your health concerns is one thing, but that’s just the first step. Once you’ve decided on CBD, you need to work out how much you need to take to experience the benefits of the compound.

The issue is that, with so many brands, products and often confusing labelling (it sometimes it feels like they’re deliberately trying to mislead you!), getting your dosing right can be difficult.

This how-to guide will explain the factors that influence CBD dosage, and help you decide what dose you should get started with to give yourself the best chance of experiencing the benefits.

So, how much CBD should you be taking? Well, it depends.

The correct CBD dosage for you will depend on a number of factors, such as:

CBD is available in various forms, including oils, tinctures, capsules, edibles, topicals, and vapes. Each form has its own absorption rate and bioavailability, which can impact dosage requirements.

The concentration of CBD in the product plays a significant role in determining the appropriate dosage. Higher concentration products may require smaller doses to achieve the desired effects.

The quality and purity of the CBD product also play a crucial role in determining dosage. High-quality CBD products sourced from reputable manufacturers undergo rigorous testing to ensure accurate CBD concentrations and absence of contaminants such as pesticides and residual solvents. Lower quality products may contain inconsistent or inaccurate CBD levels, requiring higher doses to achieve desired effects.

The severity of the condition being treated also influences CBD dosage. Those with severe or chronic conditions may require higher doses compared to individuals with mild symptoms.

Variations in metabolism can affect how quickly CBD is absorbed and metabolized by the body, which can influence dosage requirements.

When it comes to finding the right CBD dosage for you, it’s essential to start low and gradually increase the dose until the desired effects are achieved. A low dose typically starts between 5-10 milligrams, which can be slowly increased until you achieve the desired effects.

Other than that, there are some other key factors to consider before you decide what dosage to take:

CBD is being used to treat a wide range of conditions from nausea and pain to insomnia and depression. The right dosage depends on what you’re taking CBD for.

For example, the Arthritis Foundation recommends a few mg of CBD oil, taken sublingually twice a day. The dose can then be increased after a week if you are not feeling sufficient pain relief. If you’re taking CBD for insomnia, on the other hand, you might want to take a few drops before bed and not split the dosage in two.

The best thing to do is to talk to your doctor about an appropriate dosage for your concerns. This is also important as CBD may interact with other medications such as blood thinners, antidepressants and immune suppressant drugs.

If your doctor doesn’t provide a recommendation, it’s best to begin with a low dose of CBD, typically between 5-10 milligrams, and monitor your body’s response. Starting with a low dose minimises the risk of experiencing side effects while allowing you to gauge how your body reacts to CBD.

Finding the right CBD dosage requires patience and experimentation, so keep in mind that it may take some time to identify the optimal dose that provides maximum benefits with minimal side effects.

There are many, many different forms of CBD. The most popular are CBD edibles (such as CBD gummies), CBD oils, CBD topicals and CBD drinks. Some products, such as CBD gummies, or capsules tell you how much is in a single serving, but others require a bit more working out.

If you require a faster-acting method of consumption, then sublingual consumption (through a CBD oil) is the best option. However, if you want a more convenient, discreet or tastier dosage, then oral consumption is for you.

For those that require CBD for pain relief or muscle recuperation, topicals are best as these are applied to the skin and are formulated to target sore muscles and joints.

CBD strength is based on the concentration of CBD in the product, which is measured in milligrams (mg) per millilitre (ml) or as a percentage of the total product. This is calculated by dividing the total amount of CBD by the total volume of the product.

Once you’ve decided what type of CBD you want to use, you need to look at the potencies (or concentrations) and the right choice will depend on what you want from the product.

CBD is available in concentrations from 100mg to 5,000mg and more per single bottle. If you’re just starting out, a low-potency option such as 300mg is a good place to start as you monitor how your body responds to the effects of CBD.

Often people will be tempted to try a stronger potency right from the start thinking that it will deliver more of an effect. And it probably will. But if you start with a high-strength bottle, you have no way of knowing how much you needed in order to experience the benefits. In contrast, starting with a lower-strength option allows you to monitor incrementally the effects of the CBD and from there you might easily find that a lower dose works just as well as a higher dose without the higher price.

Getting the dosage right when you’re starting with CBD is important. CBD affects everyone differently, so the best approach is to start slow and low, and gradually work your way up.

For CBD oil: place two to three drops under your tongue and wait for thirty seconds before swallowing. Then, assess how you feel after thirty minutes, before taking more. Try to keep consistent and take the same dose at the same time every day, and stay within the UK government-suggested limit of 70 milligrams/day of CBD oil.

For CBD edibles: a similar small dosage is recommended if you are trying CBD for the first time. Eat one or two gummies, and wait thirty minutes or so to assess the effects before taking more. Dosage timing and consistency is important and the suggested limits are the same as for CBD oil.

Keep in mind that if you are using multiple forms of CBD (such as edibles and oil), you will need to monitor the combined daily dosage.

If you’ve been using CBD for a while you may want to change the type of CBD you use or even the brand. Here you will need to exercise caution as there may be variations in CBD content between products and brands, or it may affect you differently. Stick to the recommended dose for a product, unless your doctor instructs you otherwise. When deciding on the dosage you should:

  • Talk to your doctor, especially if you have any health concerns or take medication for a chronic condition.

  • Read the instruction. It is usually straightforward to increase your dosage by increasing the number of drops or the concentration of the product, but read each product label carefully to prevent dosage errors.

  • Consider dosing with gummies or capsules as is the easiest way to know exactly how many milligrams you are consuming with each gummy or capsule.

CBD onset time depends on the type of CBD you use. For edibles and capsules that pass through the digestive tract, it can take up to two hours before your feel the effects. In comparison, CBD oils taken sublingually take anywhere between 15 and 45 minutes, and they offer a nigher bioavailability because they bypass your digestive system. Topicals are somewhere in between and take 45 minutes and 60 minutes to have an effect.

Once you’ve established an initial dosage regimen, it’s essential to monitor your body’s response and make adjustments as needed. Keep track of how you feel after taking CBD, including changes in symptoms, mood, energy levels, and sleep patterns.

Conversely, if you experience any adverse effects such as dizziness, fatigue, nausea or diarrhoea, discontinue use and lower the dosage.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) found that CBD does not induce major side effects or physical dependence, does not get you high, and is not associated with abuse potential. In fact, it is rather the opposite. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD and CBD is considered to be safe and well tolerated in humans.

However, as with any substance, you can take too much CBD. A 2017 review of research suggests that humans can safely tolerate up to 1,500 mg a day, but everyone is different and ingesting too much CBD for your body might cause unpleasant side effects such as dry mouth, nausea, diarrhoea, upset stomach, drowsiness, light-headedness and general disorientation.

Thus, you should always follow the dosing instructions provided by the manufacturer of your specific CBD product and consult with your doctor before taking CBD if you’re taking certain medications. This is particularly important for people who take blood thinners, heart and seizure medications.

Finding the right CBD dosage involves a combination of experimentation, patience, and careful observation of your body’s response. Start with a low dose and gradually increase as needed while monitoring for both therapeutic effects and any potential side effects. Consider factors such as body weight, metabolism, the severity of the condition being treated, and the form of CBD product when determining the appropriate dosage.
